John Tartaglia (1932-2018), formerly a violist with the Minnesota Orchestra, retired in 1999. Prior to joining the Orchestra in 1968, he performed with resident string ensembles and orchestras in Tampa, Syracuse, and the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra. For many years he was an affiliated faculty member of the University of Minnesota, and, with a leave of absence from the Minnesota Orchestra in 1981-82, he taught viola at the Oberlin Conservatory. He has written several works for small ensembles, among them Wave Functions for String Trio (four vignettes about the new[quantum] physics). Several works have been premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra: Le Chat Noir: Divertimento for Three Bassoons and Orchestra; Fanfare Beethoveniana; and Improvisations for Double Bass and Chamber Orchestra.
